About JBSL

Japan Bio Science Laboratory is the pioneer in the research of nattokinase, and in 1998 was the first company in the world to isolate and market this unique enzyme. NSK-SD® is fermented using JBSL’s patented strain of Bacillus subtilis natto. JBSL also has patented the removal of Vitamin K2 from nattokinase. JBSL values continuing research and generates two new clinical studies per year on NSK-SD®.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is it important that Vitamin K2 is removed from nattokinase?

People who take Warfarin, a commonly prescribed blood thinner, are normally told by doctors to restrain from eating foods that contain a large amount of Vitamin K2 such as natto, green/yellow vegetables and chlorella because such foods weaken the effect of Warfarin. However, we have developed a Vitamin K2-removal technology and employed it for the production of NSK-SD® so that even people taking Warfarin can take nattokinase. We also have a clinical study that shows subjects taking Warfarin and NSK-SD® together did not have any adverse effects, but rather NSK-SD® helped to further stabilize the coagulation-fibrinolytic system.

What is the recommended dose for NSK-SD®?

The recommended dose for NSK-SD® is 100mg/day, which will contain 2,000FU. This is the dose that has been used for most of our efficacy studies. It is also about the same amount of nattokinase that exists in one serving of natto.

What differentiates NSK-SD® from other nattokinase brands?

Although nattokinase is the name of a single enzyme, many pseudo enzymes that claim to be nattokinase are sold on the market. For example, a peptidase that is produced by Bacillus subtilis in Japan, a protease produced by Bacillus subtilis that is sold in Taiwan and China, and a composite protease agent by Aspergillus oryzae sold in the US are just a few examples of some enzymes that claim to be “nattokinase” but are completely different enzymes. These enzymes do more of less dissolve artificial fibrin on a petri dish, however, this does not mean that this same reaction will occur in the human body, and the safety of ingesting these enzymes is also questionable.

NSK-SD® is the only nattokinase that has its own published safety, efficacy, and identity data. It is important to make sure you are purchasing true nattokinase, and not fake nattokinase that uses our published data on NSK-SD® to make their claims. We have established a simple identity method (IBOX method) for nattokinase that can distinguish real nattokinase from other enzymes. With this method, we can easily differentiate true nattokinase from other pseudo-nattokinase enzymes.
